Destination of the Year

New Braunfels

New Braunfels blends historical charm and modern fun. The city dates back to the mid-1800s, when German settlers founded the town on the Texas frontier. Today, this eclectic community reflects both its European roots and the rugged beauty of the Texas Hill Country. The city’s vibrant downtown is full of character, with historic architecture housing one-of-a-kind shops, art galleries, speakeasies, craft breweries and eateries. Only blocks from the spring-fed Comal River, visitors and patrons can spend a day tubing or lounging riverside, then meander to downtown for live music, dining, shopping, wandering and exploring. Just north of downtown, the Gruene Historic District includes shopping, dining and entertainment in an authentic Hill Country setting. Browse through shops, sample wines, check out the wares of local artisans and visit Texas’ oldest dance hall, serving up live music daily.
